5th December 2011

Sixteen year old Harriet Housam from Boston Rowing Club competed at the Great Britain Junior Rowing Trials on Saturday, and reinforced her status as one of the fastest single scullers in Britain under 18 years of age.

Harriet who has already been selected for the GB talented rowing programme called ‘World Class Start‘ sponsored by Siemens and is part of the Lincolnshire Elite Athlete Programme (LEAP), finished the 5km course from Langrick Bridge to Boston on the River Witham in a superb 23 minutes 28.4 seconds, coming in 16th place overall of the country‘s top 85 junior girl competitors.

All competitors had to achieve national qualifying times on indoor rowing machines of under 7:50mins for 2km in order to take part as well as a proven track record of high achievement and competence.

Harriet competed in her new Empacher racing boat sponsored by local producer QV Foods and Asda for the first time since taking ownership three months ago, which has allowed her to make subtle technical advances all in the pursuit of faster times.

The banks of the River Witham saw hundreds of spectators watch the racing in some of the warmest November weather in recent years, and with low winds the conditions were near to perfect.

Harriet who also cross trains at Boston‘s ‘Creations‘ gym and Geoff Moulder Swimming Complex three times a week needed all the stamina and power required to to make what could be a staked claim for a place at next years Junior European Championships in Spain.

Boston Rowing Club members will be travelling to Loughborough next weekend, where a dozen crews will be taking part in the Soar Head race.
